I made it to Houston on Saturday with surprising smoothness. My last travel escapade involved staying overnight at the Houston airport, so this trip was a very pleasant contrast! I spent most of my time on the bus and plane alternating between American Gods by Neil Gaiman and some books for Mises U this summer. I completed Liberty and Property by Mises and Anatomy of the State by Murray Rothbard. Also made it about half-way through Economic Science and the Austrian Method by Hoppe. He’s so incredibly good! I just love reading that book! The part where he demonstrates that logical positivism is self-refuting is like watching the Doctor demolish the Daleks or [insert your own favorite good guys vs. bad guys battle scene]. Anyways, after getting to Houston we lost no time in checking out the pool which is conveniently located just down the street from where my friend lives. So we hung out at the pool and then later Saturday evening watched one of the American Sherlock adaptations with Robert Downey Jr. It was quite good, but couldn’t compare with Cumberbatch and Freeman’s sheer epic-ness in the BBC series. At least now I can say that I’ve seen both!
Oh, and my other exciting news is that my paper was accepted for a conference later this year! I ran across a call for papers on any of Joss Whedon’s work, and since I’ve been watching Firefly and Dollhouse, I thought I might be able to come up with something. Inspired by my class last year on Kierkegaard, my essay is about the Socratic/Kierkegaardian influences on one of the Firefly characters. I won’t say anything else though…in the words of River Song, “spoilers!” So you’ll just have to come to the conference! Anyways, I am really excited about this project, and also a bit terrified of presenting a paper. But this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, so I know that once I get over the apprehension I will be completely thrilled about this opportunity.
Now I am off to do some work before heading over to the pool for the afternoon. I am trying to update my instagram fairly often, so you can check that out if I am not posting here! : )
